Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola showed ‘no mercy’ towards Romelu Lukaku as he mentioned the striker’s disasterclass during his backing of Barcelona boss Xavi.

Guardiola was frank about his assessment of City’s Champions League final success against Inter Milan, citing Lukaku’s missed chances as the reason he has another Champions League to his name.

Rodri’s goal midway through the second half proved to be enough for City on the night to wrap up their first European triumph.

But Guardiola didn’t shy away from dragging the on-loan Chelsea striker into the conversation regarding Xavi’s future as Barcelona manager.

Lukaku wasted Inter’s best chance of the final as he headed straight at Ederson from point blank range when it seemed easier to score. He also blocked Federico Dimarco’s goal-bound effort that ultimately saw City get their hands on the trophy.

Guardiola’s savage response left City fans lapping up his response on social media, one fan commented: “Pep showing no mercy.”

A second wrote: Pep’s press conferences next season due to winning the UCL will be all timers, we’ll not be ready for it.”

Another comment said: “AHAHA PEP COOKED LUKAKU!!” Whilst a fourth said: “He didn’t have to do Lukaku like that!”

Lukaku remains a Chelsea player although a permanent switch to Inter has been touted – despite his Champions League glory costing miss.

Guardiola on the other hand picked up his first Champions League as manager of City, last lifting the ultimate prize back in 2011 with Barcelona with his managerial protégé Xavi in the middle of the park.

Xavi now occupies the hot seat at Camp Nou where he led Barcelona to the La Liga title in 2023 ahead of fierce rivals Real Madrid.
